that when there is something that we cannot resolve at the local level. san francisco is a place that we are very proud of. we got kicked out of our office, just by the landlord and the release. there is a lot of political pressure on us just to keep the political office closed. as most of my staff will tell you, there was really one person who thought it was the perfect idea to stay in san francisco and pay the market rent, and that was me. maybe state bureaucrats did not like that some much, but at least one of them did, and that was me. we are delighted to be in san francisco. it is important for us to be on the ground. we have 25 offices around the state. because of groups like this and how supportive you are and how hard we try to work with our license fees and the public, despite all of the challenges you would expect, san francisco is one of the few places where calls come up to my level. i have all sorts of things that are -- that seem very, very challenging all the time, all over the place. you guys are about the least i hear of, and that is a great thing. i want to thank you fo

to mostly driven locally. most of the conditions you'll ever see on an abc license are because we rely, to a great extent, on the police department and local officials to determine what is best for their communities. i'm not trying to pin this on you guys or blame you guys, but we do try to work with you. we do not tend to want to overrule the police department very often. now that said, i get a fair number of petitions and appeals to me. typically, they are from the neighbors. i want to see that there is actually a practical problem posed -- that the condition is there to solve, not that this is the way the things have been or maybe there's someone who is satisfied by what is potentially wrought by having live entertainment. it is always a case by case. generally, very deferential -- i am very deferential to the removal of conditions that do not appear to be solving any problems, and by removing them we are narghile posing any problems that we cannot then thereafter solved. >> director apple smith, thank you for coming. i represent about 30 or 40 entertainment venues in san francisco,

for local emergency crews to get to them. so they had to mobilize national guard units to get those people out of their homes. things got so dangerous they had to pull the personnel back. so there were a couple hundred people still in their homes on the bay side of the city. the governor said it's a situation they will have to monitor and first thing in the morning at first light respond to and try to get those people out. not far from here just a couple blocks, one of the city's last resort shelters a guard unit went in there and pulled those people out and took them to atlantic city high school. so the shelters that were kept if place drawing criticism. chris christie's statement was there shouldn't have been shelters open here on the island. the winds are still coming ashore here. and we really won't know what kind of damage has taken place inside the city proper. i'm chris kato reporting for wcau. >> what he was explaining was cutting out of some of the time because we have a live shot in the middle of the storm about the controversy over those shelters. the the contrast is between the

along the shore. and this is really what local officials are worried about. the high tide and the combination of this long duration of the storm that they are expecting. they are expecting about 36 hours for hurricane sandy to really come through this area and just to show you over here as well, they have evacuated this entire area of downtown ocean city. and that evacuation deadline is fast approaching. we have seen people flee town all day long. and they have opened up local shelters in this county where we are hearing about 40 people resorted to shelters already. clearly, they have been preparing for this and also have learned from last year's hurricane irene. here's the local mayor. all right, well, we talked to the local mayor earlier and they are prepared under 24-hour operations here trying to keep the lines of communication open with residents here who chose not to evacuate as well as keeping up-to-date with everything going on in terms of emergency responses and any type of damage that may come because of hurricane sandy, don and chad. >> sandy, standby. we have c
